Odù Ifá
256 Configurations
01 / INHERITANCE
Begin with the context.
The Ifá corpus is organised through 256 named configurations, each associated with verses and interpretive traditions.
Place & variation
Yorùbá divinatory traditions. Terminology, authority and practice depend on a practitioner’s training and community.
02 / SYSTEM — EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Knowledge & interpretation.
A bounded set of configurations indexes a much larger oral corpus.
This is the archive’s reading of a structure or relationship, not a claim that the tradition was designed as a modern technology.
03 / FUTURE — INHERITED FUTURES SPECULATION
Could a small interface open many readings without collapsing them into one answer?
A finite index opening onto an expanding body of knowledge.
An artistic proposition to explore. Historical documentation does not establish the technological analogy.
04 / A CLOSER READING
A small structure, many readings
The distinction between a configuration and the verses attached to it matters. A finite set of addresses does not require a fixed or exhausted body of interpretation.
About the diagram
The interactive study below shows the mathematics of eight two-state positions: 2⁸ possible arrangements. It is not a divination tool. It does not assign Odù names, reproduce consultation protocols or generate predictions.
INTERACTIVE / STRUCTURE STUDY
Eight positions.
256 possibilities.
Switch each position between two states to explore a finite pattern space. This mathematical illustration does not identify an Odù or perform divination.
Modern binary notation is used here only to explain the combinatorial idea. Interpretation belongs to a different layer.
