Divination Tray
01 / INHERITANCE
Begin with the context.
Specialised surface on which divinatory marks are produced. Museum collections document numerous historical examples.
Place & variation
Yorùbá divinatory traditions. Terminology, authority and practice depend on a practitioner’s training and community.
02 / SYSTEM — EDITORIAL ANALYSIS
Knowledge & interpretation.
Tray, powder, signs, practitioner and question form one encounter.
This is the archive’s reading of a structure or relationship, not a claim that the tradition was designed as a modern technology.
03 / FUTURE — INHERITED FUTURES SPECULATION
What would an interface designed for interpretation rather than command look like?
Ritual graphical interface.
An artistic proposition to explore. Historical documentation does not establish the technological analogy.
04 / A CLOSER READING
An interface is an encounter
The tray is the most visibly bounded part of a larger arrangement. Looking only at its surface misses the practitioner, spoken interpretation, material tools and the question that brings people together.
From inherited form to future question
The project’s digital tray explores a contemporary visual language. Its use in Inherited Futures should be read as an artistic response, not as a functional substitute for a consecrated object or a trained practitioner.
