Orí

The Inner Head

01 / INHERITANCE

Begin with the context.

A major Yorùbá concept of personhood, consciousness, individuality and destiny. Interpretations vary, and it should not be simplistically translated as “soul.”

Place & variation

Yorùbá philosophical and devotional traditions in southwestern Nigeria and neighbouring communities. Accounts vary; no single formulation represents every lineage.

02 / SYSTEM — EDITORIAL ANALYSIS

Identity & continuity.

Individual identity relates embodied life to destiny and selfhood.

This is the archive’s reading of a structure or relationship, not a claim that the tradition was designed as a modern technology.

03 / FUTURE — INHERITED FUTURES SPECULATION

Could a personal digital system protect a person’s becoming rather than predict it?

Personal operating system.

An artistic proposition to explore. Historical documentation does not establish the technological analogy.

04 / A CLOSER READING

The self exceeds the profile

Orí invites a question about the ways a person is recognised. Contemporary digital systems often treat identity as accumulated data. Inherited Futures asks whether an interface could instead leave room for an inward life that cannot be fully recorded.

A material relationship

Ìbọrí and Ilé-Orí are related records because they give this inquiry a material dimension. The archive keeps the concept, the object and its housing distinct, rather than treating three records as synonyms.
